lazyweb request -- portland hotels?

quick lazyweb request. Trying to decide where to stay in portland for this upcoming trip. Traditionally (blame Orycon) we've stayed on Jantzen Island, but the traffic is now insane and the area is (ahem) in decline (again; we remember when the mall existed -- and was basically empty) -- the Columbia River hotel is gone and Walmart wants to move in (hmm. according to Commissioner Sam, this is dead), Waddles is now a Hooters, and Zupans is gone.

Also not interested in staying downtown itself, or in the Lloyd's Center/Rose District/Expo Center. Been there, done that. My preference in Portland is for something within walking distance of Light rail, but somewhat on the periphery of the city itself. We'd like to spend some time exploring the Beaverton area this trip (in our continuing "is this where we want to live some day?" research, so I'm open to suggestions.

It's too bad the north south line didn't happen; Lake Oswego would be nice, but it's a drive to everything we're planning....

ideas?

(update: thanks to everyone for the comments; we neded up in Hillsboro at the Red Lion near the airport, looks to be an easy walk to the light rail and otherwise has what we want, and we like the Red Lion chain overall).
