Policy for using my photos (updated January 8, 2008)
Effective January 8, 2008, I have decided to revoke the Creative Commons license on my photos (for reasoning why, see this posting). Effective today, I'm going back to a "contact me for permission", and assuming I agree, I'll issue an explicit license and permission to use. When you read the information in the article explaining this, you'll (hopefully) understand why.
Other than the details of the issuing of the permission, my underlying philosophy of who can use the photos and how hasn't changed significantly.
Images I upload to Flickr are limited in two ways: they are uploaded at no more than 1024x1024 pixels with a watermark. They may not be re-used without my permission.
If you need a high-res or raw versions of an image or a version of an image without a watermark, that is possible as part of the grant of permissions.
All photos should have an attribution of me as the photographer and copyright holder. Here are the attribution lines I have approved. I've tried to be flexible and non-annoying here, and you can assume that my preference is from the top down:
Copyright © Chuq Von Rospach (http://chuqui.typepad.com)
Copyright © C. Von Rospach (chuqui.typepad.com)
Copyright © Chuq Von Rospach
Copyright © C. Von Rospach
If you are involved with a legal non-profit that is involved in working with nature in some way doing education and/or advocacy (for instance, Audubon or Nature Conservancy, two groups I financially contribute to), then I will grant you permission to use my images, including the full-sized or RAW, at no cost, as if they were part of the creative commons. Just contact me with the request and we'll work it out.
The same is true if you are one of the zoos I've shot at, and you want to use some of my images; I'll be happy to coordinate that with you. If you are a zoo wanting to use images shot at another zoo, the same offer will apply, as long as I'm comfortable there won't be any confusion about the source based on the use of the photo.
If you are one of these organizations and you need a photographer for a project or an event, I'd be happy to work with you if my schedule allows. If you're interested, please drop me a line. (Please be aware that I'm based in Northern California, and that the further away you are, the harder it'll be for me to be able to take on your project).
I consider this a way to pay forward to these groups and organizations, and I'm happy to help out.
Again: all of my photos are Copyright © Chuq Von Rospach and all rights are reserved. You may not re-use them without my explicit permission -- which I am happy to give under many circumstances, so drop me a note and we'll talk about situation and we'll see what I can do.
