hlog {Hockey's Ladies of Greatness}: NBC Follow Up:

Really, do people actually think that NBC would altruistically continue to air the hockey game? Corporations don't work that way. Therefore, everyone should be mad at the NHL for stupidly allowing NBC to dictate the game time.

And, of course, you get to rip the NHL no matter what they do. In one direction, bitching about doing nothing to grow the hockey audience in the US; in the other direction, getting the game onto national TV, but getting yelled at for having no leverage over NBC to dictate terms.

The short answer: If you want to grow the game long-term, you have to make investments in that growth. It's not going to happen by magic. And part of that investment is working with partners like NBC to start bringing the game to the larger national audience and working to increase viewership and interest. And given that the NHL, like it or not, is in the weaker position here, that means taking it on NBC's terms, or not at all.

Now, I realize many of you (especially up in canada) would choose "not at all", but while there's no guarantee of success in building a larger national audience -- if you don't try, you KNOW you won't succeed.

So this is a case where no matter what the NHL does, it's wrong. makes it easy to do commentary on them, of course....
